Ashfield's Lib Dem team have launched a petition to demand tougher action on crime. The petition, to be delivered to every house in Ashfield, sets out a 5 step plan to make our streets safer.
Lib Dem Parliamentary spokesperson Cllr Jason Zadrozny met with Shadow Home Secretary Chris Huhne MP to discuss their plans. Jason says that the Government has failed to keep Ashfield residents safe.
"We live in a country where less than 1 in every 100 offences results in a conviction" said Jason "Crime is Ashfield alone has risen 8% in the last year. That's simply not good enough. Despite lots of tough talk, the Labour Government has failed to take tough action on crime.".
The Lib Dem's 5 point plan to cut crime is:-
1. More Police on patrol. By scrapping the multi-billion pound ID card scheme, we could put at extra 10,000 Police out on patrol.
2. Life should mean life. Sentences should mean what they say, and life should mean life.
3. Compulsory work a training in prison. Prisoners who do not take part in education or training are three times more likely to go back to crime - but two-thirds of offenders receive no training at all.
4. Better Compensation for victims. Paid for by more prison work done by offenders.
5. Take back our town centres. Local communities should have the power to close pubs and clubs that cause trouble.
In Ashfield the Liberal Democrats have reaffirmed their plans to take back the streets, parks and town centres for residents by launching their new street warden scheme. The £1.7 million scheme was commended by Chris Huhne MP on his visit to the East Midlands.
