Abolish the unfair Council tax says Wendy Johnson Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate8.32.18pm BST (GMT +0100) Sat 30th Apr 2005
Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Ashfield Wendy Johnson today highlighted the unfair council tax system that the people of Ashfield have suffered with for the last 8 years of Labour government. "The people of Ashfield have seen year on year increases in their council tax payments, with the average Band D property now paying over £1300, £100 more than the national average" said Wendy "These rises have not been matched by increases in earnings, and that is why the council tax is so unfair"
The Liberal Democrat proposal for a local income tax system would link the funding local services to each person's ability to pay. Under the proposals, three quarters of households would pay less, with the vast majority of people in Ashfield benefiting from lower local tax rates, with the average saving being £450 per year. "The idea of linking local tax to the value of someone's house doesn't make any sense, and we want to change that by scrapping tax and replacing it with the more progressive Local Income tax system." Wendy commented.
