Liberal Democrats in Mansfield have selected Deputy Mayor, Phil Smith to fight the forthcoming by-election in Mansfield East Ward of Nottinghamshire County Council.

The by-election, which looks set to be a close race between New Labour, and the Lib Dems, polls September 28th. It has been caused by the sad death of the Labour Councillor George Kane.

Phil, is the Deputy Mayor of Mansfield and portfolio holder for corporate issues. He has a longstanding reputation as a hardworking and dedicated District Councillor, fighting for the causes of local people.

Speaking on the campaign trail, Phil said, "Many people feel that Mansfield has been taken for granted for too long by New Labour. It's time for a change."

"I am working with residents to tackle litter and dog fouling locally and I am extremely concerned about the speed in which traffic races through our estates."

Mansfield's Lib Dem Euro MP Bill Newton Dunn warmly welcomed the choice, "I am delighted that Phil has agreed to stand in the by-election. He is experienced, dynamic and energetic and he will make a fine Councillor for the people of Mansfield East."
