Hucknall By-Election Candidate Selected11.39.41pm GMT Thu 4th Jan 2007 Liberal Democrats have selected former parliamentary candidate, Harry Toseland to fight the forthcoming by-election in the Hucknall division of Nottinghamshire County Council. The by-election, which looks set to be a close race between New Labour, and the Lib Dems, goes to the polls on January 25th. It has been caused by the sad death of the Councillor Nellie Smedley. The last time Hucknall residents went to the polls, residents overwhelmingly voted for a Liberal Democrat councillor, sending New Labour the message that they can no longer neglect the people of Hucknall. Harry has a longstanding reputation as a hardworking and dedicated local campaigner, fighting for the causes of local people. Speaking on the campaign trail, Harry said, "Many people feel that Hucknall has been taken for granted for too long by New Labour. It's time for a change." "I am working with residents to tackle litter locally and I am extremely concerned about the speed in which traffic races through our estates. We are also working hard to get the bus services back in place throughout Hucknall" Hucknall West District Councillor Austin Rathe warmly welcomed the choice, "I am delighted that Harry has agreed to stand in the by-election. He is very well known locally for his hard work and dedication to Hucknall, he is experienced, committed and he will make a fine Councillor for the people of Hucknall."
